Processing Loss and Opening Up
Following the tragic loss of her mother, Naomi Judd, who died by suicide in April 2022, Wynonna Judd candidly discussed why it took time for her to share her experience publicly. Speaking with ExtraTV’s Mona Kosar Abdi, Wynonna explained her past reluctance to speak out, noting a long-standing desire to avoid appearing as a victim after being in a very dark place following the tragedy.
Recalling the day of her mother’s passing, Wynonna received a phone call around 11 AM from their life coach directing her to go to her mother’s house immediately. After her sister Ashley initially found Naomi, Wynonna found her on the floor. Despite the tragedy, Wynonna attended The Judds’ induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame the very next day, reflecting that the experience taught her to show up regardless of the circumstances. She shared that it ultimately took four years to find peace with the situation.
Navigating Personal and Family Dynamics
In addition to discussing her mother, Wynonna provided clarity on her relationship with her younger sister, Ashley Judd. She clarified that the sisters are currently taking a break to focus on their individual journeys, stating there is no rift between them and that taking time apart allows them to do personal work to come back together better.
Wynonna also addressed the difficult relationship with her 30-year-old estranged daughter, Grace Kelly, who has struggled with addiction for years and is currently incarcerated in Virginia. Wynonna explained that she ultimately had to stop providing monetary assistance to avoid enabling the addiction, which led to a strain in their communication. Wynonna expressed hope for healing and reconciliation in the future.
