Sphere Launching in UAE: Abu Dhabi to Unveil 20,000-Seat Sphere Venue
Abu Dhabi is getting ready to bring one of the worlds well-known entertainment concepts to the UAE.
Sphere Abu Dhabi is going to appear on Yas Island as the Sphere venue outside the United States. The project is planned as a 20,000-capacity entertainment destination combining large-scale concerts, immersive productions, sporting events and brand experiences.
The construction phase of the project is expected to cost US$1.7 billion with completion targeted for the end of 2029.
A New Sphere for Abu Dhabi
Sphere Abu Dhabi will be developed through a partnership between the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi and Sphere Entertainment Co. the company behind the Sphere in Las Vegas.
The venue will be built on Yas Island between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi. Its location places it close to some of the islands entertainment, hospitality and tourism attractions.
The project is designed to become more than another concert venue. Sphere Abu Dhabi will use audiovisual technology to create immersive experiences where the venue itself becomes part of the show.
20,000 Seats and Immersive Technology
Sphere Abu Dhabi is expected to accommodate up to 20,000 people depending on the configuration used for an event.
The venue is planned to feature an exterior Exosphere as well as a large interior wraparound display. Abu Dhabis official media office describes the planned venue as 112 metres high with 16K wraparound screens and high-tech audio designed for events.
The technology is intended to change the relationship between an audience and a live event.
Of simply watching a stage from a seat visitors will experience visual and audio elements surrounding them throughout the venue.
What Will Take Place Inside Sphere Abu Dhabi?
The venue is expected to focus on three categories of programming.
Immersive Sphere Experiences
Sphere Abu Dhabi will host immersive productions built around multisensory storytelling.
These experiences are expected to use Spheres large-scale screens, sound technology and other production systems to create shows specifically designed for the venue.
Concert Residencies
Concerts will also be a part of the venue.
Sphere Abu Dhabi is expected to host other Arabic artists alongside international stars. This could give artists another destination for large-scale residencies and special performances in the Middle East.
Sporting and Brand Events
The venue will not be limited to music.
Its flexible configurations are expected to allow Sphere Abu Dhabi to host sporting spectacles, conferences, product launches and other major brand events. Combat sports are also among the types of events identified for the venue.
A Major Addition to Yas Island
Yas Island has already established itself as one of Abu Dhabis entertainment and tourism destinations.
The island is home to attractions and venues including Yas Mall, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, Yas Waterworld and Yas Marina Circuit.
Sphere Abu Dhabi is expected to add another international attraction to that ecosystem.
Its location will also place the venue within a drive of Zayed International Airport while its proximity to existing hotels and entertainment attractions could make it easier for international visitors to include Sphere events in wider Abu Dhabi trips.
Bringing Emirati Culture to the Sphere
While Sphere is known internationally for its technology and immersive entertainment Abu Dhabis project is also expected to have a local identity.
Plans call for the Exosphere to showcase Emirati culture through large-scale art and visual storytelling. The venue is also expected to feature experiences that communicate elements of Emirati culture and heritage.
Emirati artists are expected to have opportunities to display their work on the Exosphere giving the exterior screen a cultural role alongside its entertainment function.
Construction and Opening Timeline
Sphere Abu Dhabi is expected to be completed by the end of 2029.
The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi has announced a US$1.7 billion investment in the construction phase. In May 2026 ALEC Holdings was awarded a US$1.7 billion contract covering the design, procurement and construction of the venue.
The project is being developed as part of Abu Dhabis effort to expand its cultural, tourism and entertainment infrastructure.
Once operational Sphere Abu Dhabi is expected to create thousands of jobs through its ongoing operations.
Spheres First Venue Outside the United States
The Abu Dhabi project represents a step in Sphere Entertainments plans to establish a global network of venues.
The first Sphere opened in Las Vegas in September 2023. Quickly became known for its enormous interior screen, exterior LED display and immersive concert productions.
Sphere Abu Dhabi will bring the concept to a market while adapting the venue to the culture and entertainment landscape of the UAE.
A New Destination for Major Events
Sphere Abu Dhabi could become one of the UAEs distinctive venues for concerts and major events once it opens.
A 20,000-person capacity gives the venue the scale required for international artists while its immersive technology creates possibilities that go beyond a conventional arena.
For Abu Dhabi the project also fits into a strategy of attracting international visitors expanding tourism and strengthening the emirates position as a global destination, for culture and entertainment.
With construction expected to continue toward a 2029 completion attention will now turn to how Sphere Abu Dhabi takes shape on Yas Island. And which artists, productions and events will eventually become part of its opening chapter.
great!!
