How Cody Johnson Refused Early Label Demands to Build a Career on His Own Terms

Country music star Cody Johnson recently opened up about the pivotal moments early in his career when he decided to turn down Nashville record executives who insisted on reshaping his image and musical identity.

Key Highlights

  • Johnson shared details during an interview on CBS Mornings with Jan Crawford.
  • Early label meetings included requests for image changes, such as wearing a baseball cap.
  • Returned to Texas to build his fan base independently through honky-tonks and selling CDs.
  • Now holds four nominations at the upcoming 60th Annual CMA Awards, including Entertainer of the Year.

Standing Firm Against Nashville Pressures

During a sit-down conversation on CBS Mornings with Jan Crawford, Johnson recalled his initial interactions with major record labels in Nashville. Executives expressed interest in his talent but insisted that modifications to his style were required before he could achieve widespread commercial success.

Specifically, Johnson noted that executives suggested stylistic adjustments, such as trading his traditional look for a baseball cap. Johnson explained that while he had nothing against the attire itself, he took issue with the approach that implied he needed to change who he was to make it in the industry. Frustrated by the experience, Johnson walked away from those early opportunities and opted to forge his own path forward.

“The pressure of knowing that you don’t know how to pay your water bill and you’ve just been on the road for a month and haven’t seen your wife or your child, and you have nothing to show for it. That’s tough to look in the mirror.”

Grinding as an Independent Artist

Following those meetings, the Texas native returned home to build his career through grit and hustle. He spent years working as an independent act, touring honky-tonks and bars while selling CDs straight out of his vehicle. Johnson acknowledged the immense emotional and financial strains of those early touring years, balancing family life while striving to make ends meet, but remained committed to never giving up on his dreams.

Eventually, the industry came around to his unyielding authenticity. Johnson subsequently signed with Warner Music Nashville without sacrificing his core identity as a cowboy and musician.

Career Milestones & Successes

  • 2018 Milestone: Earned his first No. 1 country radio hit with “’Til You Can’t.”
  • Chart Hit Successes: Scored major radio hits including “Human,” “The Painter,” and “I’m Gonna Love You” (featuring Carrie Underwood).
  • New Release: Highlighted his music and career journey alongside his album, Banks of the Trinity.
  • CMA Recognition: Headed into the 60th Annual CMA Awards with four distinct nominations, including Entertainer of the Year.

Today, Johnson sells out arenas worldwide while managing his cattle ranch, having smashed through the perceived ceilings of his early career by remaining true to his sound and roots.
