An Unexpected Airport Call
Recounting the event during a 2025 interview with Taste of Country Nights, Young shared that he was traveling back home from Idaho or another location in the Midwest on a Sunday evening, aware that the official status of the song reaching the top spot would be revealed at midnight.
While walking through the airport toward baggage claim after landing, Young received a call from his promotion vice president, who handed the line over to a voice that sounded vaguely familiar.
"He hands the phone over and it's this guy, and he goes, 'Yeah, man, this is Kenny. I just wanna say congrats on your first No. 1. I remember mine like it's yesterday, that's a big deal!'"
Prank Suspicions and a Saloon Celebration
Initially, Young suspected that one of his friends was pulling a joke on him, as his promotion executive was known to play pranks. However, after the call, his VP confirmed that it was indeed Chesney speaking from his personal plane, adding that Chesney wanted to buy him a drink to mark the achievement.
Celebration Location
Venue: Red Door (Small saloon in Nashville)
The two later met up at Red Door, a small saloon located in Nashville, where Chesney bought Young his first beer following his premiere No. 1 song. Following that initial breakthrough, Young established himself as one of country music's most reliable hitmakers.
