Tylee Craft died on October 12 2024 at the age of 23 after a two-year battle with cancer. His death brought an outpouring of tributes from his family teammates, coaches and the wider UNC community.
A Young Athlete With Big Ambitions
Tylee Craft was. Raised in Sumter, South Carolina and became a highly regarded football player before joining the North Carolina Tar Heels.
At UNC he played in games during the 2020 and 2021 seasons as a receiver and special-teams player. His athletic ability was one part of the impression he made on people around him.
Those who knew Tylee Craft often remembered his personality, warmth and ability to stay connected with his teammates when his health prevented him from continuing his football career in the usual way.

Tylee Craft was diagnosed on March 14 2022 with stage-four cell neuroendocrine carcinoma, a rare form of lung cancer.
The diagnosis forced him away from football but it did not remove him from the UNC football community. Tylee Craft continued attending practices, meetings and other team activities whenever his health allowed.
Of allowing the illness to completely define his life he continued looking for ways to encourage others and remain involved with the people who meant so much to him.
Turning Adversity Into Inspiration
One of the recognizable ideas associated with Tylee Craft was "Keep Swinging."
The phrase became a reflection of his approach to adversity. His determination during treatment inspired teammates, coaches and people outside the football program.
Tylee Craft was recognized with the Disney Spirit Award for his impact in college football. He was also named to the Uplifting Athletes Rare Disease Champion Team. Became involved in organizations and initiatives focused on lung cancer awareness.
His story demonstrated that leadership does not always come from scoring touchdowns or winning games. Sometimes leadership comes from the way a person responds when circumstances become difficult.
A Voice for Lung Cancer Awareness
Tylee Craft also used his experience to raise awareness about lung cancer and the importance of research and screening.
During his treatment he supported organizations including Team Draft, the White Ribbon Project, LiveLung and the American Lung Cancer Screening Initiative. His advocacy eventually became a part of the legacy he left behind.
In 2025 UNC posthumously recognized Tylee Craft as the recipient of the Eric Montross Public Service Award. The honor recognized his efforts to increase awareness of lung cancer and screening in North Carolina.

Tylee Crafts connection with the Tar Heel football program continues after his passing.
UNC renamed its football nutrition center the Tylee Craft Nutrition Center creating a reminder of his connection to the program and the people he inspired.
His teammates and coaches have also continued to remember him through tributes and personal traditions.
During a game following his death teammate J.J. Jones wore Tylee Crafts No. 13 Jersey while UNC organized tributes to celebrate his life and impact.
A Legacy That Extends Beyond Football
Perhaps the meaningful part of Tylee Crafts legacy is the number of people who describe being changed by knowing him.
His story reached teammates, coaches, classmates, cancer patients, young athletes and members of his hometown community.
